2nd Grade

Color Wheel Fish

In this lesson we re-visit the concepts and vocabulary of Primary and Secondary colors in Art.

Kindergarten

Color Wheel Rainbows!

This lesson was designed to be yet another visit to the concepts of the color wheel and a review of the vocabulary words.  It was also, a great way to try and get some more cheer into the school.  We are seriously over Winter and need some warm Spring weather!

3rd Grade

Model Magic Snowmen

A fun way to introduce sculpture techniques to the 3rd graders and totally have lots of fun with air dry clay!  Each student was given one packet of Crayola Model Magic and a recycled CD and several sculpting tools.  Day 1: was spent creating the snowmen and any other added features, such as; eyes, scarves, boots, noses, etc.. Day 2: after letting the sculptures air dry for several days, color was added with colored sharpies, ribbons were added and arms were attached with pipe cleaners.

5th Grade

Radial Weaving

Each year I do a weaving lesson with my 3-5 grades, and for the most part, the kids really enjoy the experience.  I think its because they really get to work independently for several Art classes with very little interruptions.

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten we recently celebrated fire safety and awareness by creating these very cool firetrucks made from recycled cardboard egg carton tops.  This is a favorite in my Art curriculum, I don't do many projects repeatedly, but I admit that this firetruck lesson tends to pop back into Kindergarten Art lessons each year.

5th Grade

Georgia O'Keeffe
Desert/Skull Lesson

The students studied many different works of art from the great female Artist Georgia O'Keeffe.  We were inspired to make "rugs" from her time in the Southwest, when she was inspired by Native Americans and Art of Mexico.  O'Keeffe also did many painting of bones that she found in the desert, so we also added a drawn Steer's skull.

5th Grade

OP Art

5th Grade learned more about OP art with this lesson, we also discussed color value.  Each student created the black and white circles and then picked colors that were light and dark to compliment the circles.  The goal was to get the impression of depth with the alternating convex and concave radiating lines.

1st Grade

Color Wheel Birdies

For this lesson, we had some fun with making a parade of birdies to demonstrate our primary colors and the secondary colors that we learned how to mix.  Adding the beaks, tails, wings

and legs was so much fun for the First graders!

3rd Grade

OP Art

We discussed what OP Art is, and the work of Bridget Riley.  First, each student used a 12 inch ruler to make a "checkerboard" and then we used found objects to trace the concentric circles.  The most difficult part of this lesson was following the pattern, since often the colors would end up touching one another, and that really frustrated some of the students.  Overall, I think they look amazing!

Kindergarten

Color Wheel Caterpillars

Kindergarten was introduced to the differences between primary and secondary colors with this lesson.  First, we folded our 12 x 18 papers into 6 squares.  Then we marked each square with a color of the basic color wheel.  After painting each square a differing color, we traced circles onto each color.  Then Kindergarteners drew a different kind of line inside each circle.  Lastly, we cut them all out and arranged them in color wheel order to create our Caterpillars.  I loved hearing the students talk about which color should come next in color wheel order.

5th Grade

Winter Birch Trees

Great use of several watercolor techniques and adding textures!  We started with a  horizon line and removable tape, then the watercolor fun began.  The students were able to experiment with wet into wet techniques and added salt to the wet paint and observed

the results.  After the paint dried we added texture to the trees and also painted shadows with black watercolor. For a final touch, each student framed their trees on black paper and added hand drawn snowflakes.
