1st Grade

Color Wheel Birdies

For this lesson, we had some fun with making a parade of birdies to demonstrate our primary colors and the secondary colors that we learned how to mix.  Adding the beaks, tails, wings

and legs was so much fun for the First graders!

3rd Grade

OP Art

We discussed what OP Art is, and the work of Bridget Riley.  First, each student used a 12 inch ruler to make a "checkerboard" and then we used found objects to trace the concentric circles.  The most difficult part of this lesson was following the pattern, since often the colors would end up touching one another, and that really frustrated some of the students.  Overall, I think they look amazing!

Kindergarten

Color Wheel Caterpillars

Kindergarten was introduced to the differences between primary and secondary colors with this lesson.  First, we folded our 12 x 18 papers into 6 squares.  Then we marked each square with a color of the basic color wheel.  After painting each square a differing color, we traced circles onto each color.  Then Kindergarteners drew a different kind of line inside each circle.  Lastly, we cut them all out and arranged them in color wheel order to create our Caterpillars.  I loved hearing the students talk about which color should come next in color wheel order.

5th Grade

Winter Birch Trees

Great use of several watercolor techniques and adding textures!  We started with a  horizon line and removable tape, then the watercolor fun began.  The students were able to experiment with wet into wet techniques and added salt to the wet paint and observed

the results.  After the paint dried we added texture to the trees and also painted shadows with black watercolor. For a final touch, each student framed their trees on black paper and added hand drawn snowflakes.

2nd grade

More penguins please!

For these sweet little penguins we recycled small plastic cups by taping them lid to lid.  We covered the cups in paper mache, and painted them black.  Later, we added eyes, beaks, feet and tummies.  Lastly, the penguins were hot glued to salvaged styrofoam pieces with a cool temp hot glue gun.

4th grade

Paper Mache Snow People

This winter started out with very little snow for  us, so we had to use some good imagination for our snow people that we built in the Art room.  First, each student received a recycled creamer bottle and we filled it with some material to weight it down, so it would not tip over.  Then, we paper mached the entire bottle with several layers, then later we painted the entire bottle white. Lastly, we added lots of embellishments such as: hats, felt scarves, noses and eyes and mouths.  We used recycled buttons and created arms out of chenille sticks.  They look spectacular!

4th Grade

4th grade cows and red barns

4th Graders created a Cow collage with construction paper and other found objects.  We studied the history of Wisconsin and also the history of the classic red barns of Wisconsin and the midwest.  We made a combination of brown and white cows.  The students even included some hay for the cows to snack on!
